Mercy Center to Host Holocaust Exhibit - "Memory & Legacy"

Mercy Center is proud to announce that it will be the first Catholic venue to host a traveling exhibit telling the amazing story of the New Haven Holocaust Memorial – the first monument of its kind on public land.

The memorial is located in Edgewood Park in New Haven. It is currently undergoing renovation after 30 years.  The steel structure is corroded and welds are broken.  Eighteen plaques bearing the names of the concentration camps that the immigrants had survived are badly stained and illegible.  The six evergreen trees representing rebirth have also not been tended to.  Now, a second generation of survivors is continuing the memory of the Holocaust by raising money and awareness for the restoration of the memorial – a monument that stands as a testament of how New Haven opened its arms to welcome survivors of WWII.

“Memory and Legacy” is an exhibit that describes the story of The New Haven Holocaust Memorial. It is a design based on a six-sided Jewish star with barbed-wire stanchions.

The exhibit will be at Mercy Center for all to discover from May 19 – June 20, 2008.

The exhibit tells the story of how a handful of survivors from the Nazi death camps, that took the lives of six million Jews, garnered support from sympathetic New Haveners to create the moving memorial.  It’s a story of great courage and one that Mercy Center is proud to share.

A special reception will take place on Wednesday, May 28, at 7:00pm in the Dempsey Auditorium. The public is invited.
